The CHDP Program

The Child Health and Disability Prevention (CHDP) is a preventive program that delivers periodic health assessments and services to children and youth from low-income families in California. It provides families with care coordination and helps them with medical appointment scheduling, transportation, and access to diagnostic and treatment services.

It is important to remember that many health problems can be prevented, corrected, or reduced in severity by prompt diagnosis and treatment. The CHDP program is funded to help in the early detection and prevention of health problems in children and youth from low-to-moderate income families. Through the program, children and youth will receive routine regular health exams to assess their condition.

Benefits of the CHDP Program

There are a lot of benefits that the CHDP provides. One of its benefits is the periodic child health assessments and examinations. A health assessment consists of the following:

  • Health history
  • Physical examination
  • Dental assessment
  • Nutritional assessment
  • Developmental assessment
  • Vision and hearing tests
  • Laboratory tests
  • Immunizations
  • Tuberculin test
  • Health education
  • Referral for any needed diagnosis and treatment

The health assessments are conducted by private physicians, community clinics, local health departments, managed care plans, and some local school districts.

Additionally, under California law, all children entering the first grade needs to have either a CHDP certificate of health examination or a waiver on file at the school in which they are enrolled. The CHDP program can help assist families to meet this requirement.

Find Out If Your Child Qualifies

Medi-Cal children and youth up until the age of 21 are eligible for CHDP‘s scheduled periodic health assessments and services. This is based on the federally mandated Early and Periodic Screening, Diagnosis, and Treatment (EPSDT) Program.

For those Non-Medi-Cal children and youth, the CHDP program gives a schedule of periodic health services catered to them. This is available for those infants to 19-year-olds whose income is equal to or less than 266 percent of the federal income guidelines.
