RSV and the flu in children are typically diagnosed based on a combination of clinical symptoms and laboratory tests:
- Symptom Assessment: We evaluate the child’s symptoms, including coughing, runny nose, fever, wheezing, and difficulty breathing.
- Nasal or Throat Swab: We collect respiratory secretions from inside the mouth or nose for testing. We use the sample on a rapid RSV antigen test to check for signs of RSV and on a rapid influenza diagnostic test to detect the flu virus.
- Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) Testing: For more definitive results, we may recommend PCR testing to detect both RSV and the flu. PCR tests are more accurate but may take longer to produce results than rapid tests.
- Blood Tests: We may perform blood tests to check for signs of infection or inflammation.
- Chest X-rays: We may check the child's lungs to assess for any complications, such as pneumonia or bronchiolitis.
